The switch to prismatic cells, which are 20% more energy-dense than current packs, helps push estimated range to over 300 miles for base trims and potentially over 400 for high-performance models. Battery packs are modular, too, easier to replace, upgrade, and recycle.

BMW has also eliminated cobalt and nickel from much of its battery chemistry, reducing reliance on conflict-prone resources. And the factories building these cells? They’re powered by renewables.

Charging

The Neue Klasse cars are engineered for the kind of charging experience EV skeptics have been waiting for. Using compatible DC fast chargers, they’ll add 70% of their capacity in around 20 minutes. BMW’s 800-volt architecture is to thank, paired with a new thermal management system that helps the battery hit its optimal charging temperature in less time.

There’s also bidirectional charging support, meaning your Neue Klasse can power your home or feed excess juice back into the grid, especially handy during peak demand periods.

BMW is leveraging partnerships to offer access to over 300,000 public chargers globally, many of them ultra-fast.
